Between the 50s and the 70s, people in the UK still performed the traditional ballads in Jazz and Blues Rock. Then the music sound started to change as well as the genres by the experimental collaboration between different styles.
This resulted in increased popularity of Pop, Progressive Rock, Soul, and heavy metal music. During and after the 80s, new genres appeared in the music industry like Hip Hop and House. From the 2000s onward, we started enjoying great music in soul and R&B when some great artists turned the traditional music into a very commercialized one.
Let's review some of the most popular genres in the UK nowadays:
Pop music was the dominant genre in the UK for decades with generations of boy bands and girl groups such as Take That and Spice Girls. Some of the most famous pop songs are John Lennon’s “Imagine” and Robson & Jerome – Unchained Melody/(There’ll Be Bluebirds Over).
R&B and Soul
Soul and R&B music movement is marked by great female solo artists like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, and Adele. While Amy recreated the retro jazz music, Adele evolved the traditional soul music to commercial soul music called ‘’contemporary R&B’’. They have created their way of jazz sound by mixing different genres. They encouraged generations of musicians to use their voices and sing individual jazz and R&B music.
We can mention some soul and R&B singles like John Morales ft Natasha Watts – I'm Giving All My Love and Adele – Hello.
Dance music used to dominate the radio played by bands, but it evolved within the decades in new forms such as hip hop and electronic style. You can dance on the remix sounds the DJs create, so it is known as entertaining music. Some of the dance singles ranked on the top of the charts is Wild Child – Renegade Master 98, Ruff Driverz – Don’t stop.
Rock music is excellent for live show performances thanks to the guitar solos, which people will always like. This genre also evolved to new waves of pop and rock, blues rock, progressive rock, punk rock, hard rock, and heavy metal. One of the most popular UK songs is Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody and Oasis – Supersonic.
Some of the well-known hip hop, rap bands in the UK are Adam and the Ants, Hijack, and The Clash. Another part of the hip hop movement is the graffiti – an expressive art that features painting a wall in a public area with no permission to do so. Some rap/hip-hop singles recognized with British awards are: Tinie Tempah – Pass Out; Dave – Funky Friday and the song Immigrants (We Get the Job Done) played by several singers – K'naan, Snow Tha Product, Riz MC, and Residente.
No matter how many years have gone by, the above genres will always take part in the music business even if just used partially within the upcoming new commercial styles.
